Re: Serial number look up Posted by John Liles on September 17, 2013, 5:52 am, in reply to 'Serial number look up ' Hello Tim, and welcome to the forum. If you go to the home page, and from the menu stacked vertically on the left of the page, hold your cursor over the word SHOTGUNS, then click on YEAR OF MANUFACTURE, you will be taken to a page where you can click on the highlighted words LOOK UP A SERIAL NUMBER. From there, you input the gauge of the gun, the entire serial number, and in your case since you said the gun is a Field Grade, you indicate that it is a post 1913 gun. The resulting response will be the year of manufacture. Beyond that, you could order a research letter for your gun, which will have more info about your particular gun. Good luck, John |

Re: Serial number look up Posted by NIKOS VROUVAS on September 17, 2013, 6:42 am, in reply to 'Re: Serial number look up ' FIRST OF ALL, I WANNA THANK YOU FOR YOUR IMMEDIATE ANSWER, BUT STILL I NEED TO ASK, ARE YOU TOTALY CERTAIN FOR THE YEAR OF CONSTRUCTION, SINCE I HAVE INFORMATION ABOUT THAT SERIAL NUMBER THAT BELONGS TO THE YEAR 1947. DON'T GET ME WRONG, I DO NOT DOUBT YOUR CREDIBILITY, BUT AS YOU UNDERSTAND I NEED TO BE 100% SURE. WHATSMORE, I'M GIVING YOU ANOTHER DETAIL. SOMEWHERE IN BETWEEN OR AFTER THE SERIAL NUMBER THERE IS THE LETTER 'R'. |

Re: Serial number look up Posted by John Liles on September 17, 2013, 8:02 am, in reply to 'Re: Serial number look up ' Hello again Nikos, no worries at all! If your serial # had been FWS 27229, it would have been a later Marlin gun and would have been made in 1947. I ran the number that way and it comes back 1947. However, since your gun is #FWE 27229, she was born in 1920. John |

Re: Serial number look up Posted by NIKOS VROUVAS on September 17, 2013, 11:36 am, in reply to 'Re: Serial number look up ' To be honest i don't know. Propably an immigrand relative of mine brought it with him from U.S. I need to say here that this summer, a good uncle of mine gave me a Parker VHE 16 ga 1937 which i instantly felt in love with. My late father owned LC without me knowing about it. It was given to him by his brother in law, twenty years ago. When i found it, i went crazy. It was like i found a treasure because i realised it was an LC which i've read about while i was dealing with informations about my PARKER. It was in excellejt condition. Bright new. On the top right barrel it is written:LC SMITH IDEAL GRANDE, on the left top: ARMS CO MFRS FULTON N.Y USA(on the 'base-mirror'), under the barrels R22729 LONDON STEEL and in the middle (also under both barrels) C44S. This year hunting season i am seriously thinking to go hunting with 1 1/16 oz cartiges. I am sure my LC can take that much. Thats all about my precious guns my fiend John. Iam very excited about my ELSI. Feel free to give me any useful advice. Coming from you would be a great gift. P.S. May you gave good shots!! Thank you again. |

Re: Serial number look up Posted by John Liles on September 17, 2013, 8:00 pm, in reply to 'Re: Serial number look up ' Hello Nikos, wow, your relatives sure had good taste in shotguns! (Except for the Parker of course! ((Just kidding!)) The R prefix with the serial number would indicate that your barrels are fitted to a REGULAR weight frame. This would be verified by there only being one screw that holds the side-plates on the receiver. Many folks, and I'm one, prefer REGULAR weight guns. If it were a FEATHERWEIGHT gun, it would have a total of three screws that attach the side-plates to the receiver. I'm not sure of what the C44S means under both barrels, but maybe REVDOCDREW will be able to fill us in on that detail, as he is the resident expert on barrel markings! What will you be hunting with your LC Smith shotgun? I hunt doves and ducks with an O Grade gun that my Great Grandfather purchased new in 1912. The fluid steel barrels (London Steel) that your gun has (if they are in good condition, and haven't been honed) can withstand stronger loads than it's 93 year old wooden stock. You'd be wise to have a good vintage gunsmith check out your gun before you take it in the field. We usually shoot low pressure loads in our LC Smith guns to help protect the wood. We are lucky here in the US to have several sources of high quality low pressure loads commercially available, and many of our shooters actually hand-load their own shells. Someone on the forum may be able to direct you to some vintage gun loads in Greece, or we can point you in the right direction to acquire them from here in the USA. Both of your recent acquisitions will, depending on their condition, make you fine hunting partners! Good luck, and feel free to contact me via email if I can help out any further, or just continue to ask questions here. Lots of folks smarter than me read the forum here every day! Just click on the envelope beside my name at the top of the post. Good luck, and congratulations on having come into possession of a couple of fine family heirlooms! John |

Re: Serial number look up Posted by NIKOS VROUVAS on September 18, 2013, 3:08 am, in reply to 'Re: Serial number look up ' GOODMORNING MY DEAR FRIEND JOHN(IF I MAY CALL YOU THAT WAY) I'M GRATEFUL FOR YOUR KIND WORDS AND YOUR DIRECTIONS AS WELL. I'M THINKING OF HUNTING WITH LC WOOD PIGEONS, SCOLOPAX RUSTICOLA AND TORDO PHILOMELOS. I'LL TRY TO SEND YOU IN YOUR EMAIL SOME PHOTOS THAT TAKEN FROM MY OWN LC. THE BARRELS HAVEN'T BEEN HONED AND WHATSMORE INSIDE OF THEM ARE IN 98%+ GOOD CONDITION. IS YOUR OWN SWEET ELSIE WITH DAMASCUS BARREL? PS1: IT'S TRUE THAT THE WOOD NEAR SIDELOCK HAVE SOME CRACKS, BUT I SUPPOSE THAT'S NOT A BIG ISSUE, SINCE IT CONSERNS THE OUTER SURFACE AND IF USING LOWER THAN 9000PCI CATRIGES IT WOULDN'T BE A PROBLEM. PS2:NOTE: MY CORRECT EMAIL ADDRESS IS:nikoschryssa@yahoo.gr PLEASE USE THIS ONE, BECAUSE BY MISTAKE IT WAS POSTED WRONGLY.

Re: Serial number look up Posted by David Williamson on November 8, 2016, 3:53 pm, in reply to 'Re: Serial number look up ' | Fred your hammer gun is from 1908, it would be a 2 pin back action lock. Royal Steel barrels came out in 1898 and they were the cheapest barrels offered (easiest to make) but they are fluid steel and have a very good tensile strength. |

Smith typewriter photos of L.C. Smith 8 by year then serial number by date To find out when your typewriter was made using the typewriters serial number, start by choosing the brand from the select box below. Both side plates have L.C. SMITH stamped, just forward of the hammer location. Underneath the forearm the following is stamped: PAT'D JUNE.1.-80. It has a serial number 11XXX. From what I can determine on the internet, the gun was made in Syracuse NY in the early 1880s. I have my dad's old LC Smith (Not the Marlin knock-off) and would like to date it's age. Can someone direct me to where I might trace the serial number?
